Eating In Delft

Test your might and eat herring raw from the tail like a Dutchie (picture above), or indulge in the crunchy delight of a kroket (picture below)

Lunch/dinner: At Eetcafé de Verbeelding they serve good food in a ‘gezellig’ ambiance. Their menu changes often and is priced quite well. If the weather permits, do sit outside on the boat!

The best apple pie: Kobus Kuch is one of Delft’s most famous cafes; you can sit here from dusk till dawn and they serve the best apple pie (with whipped cream) in Delft! When the weather is nice, people sit outside on the terrace to enjoy a drink or two.

Lunch/pastry: For Delfts Blauw (Delft Blue) lovers, you must visit Stads-Koffyhuis. The interior is super cosy (with a Delft Blue themed restroom!) and they serve award-winning sandwiches and yummy pastries. They also bake authentic Dutch pancakes from locally sourced ingredients. My personal favourite is the Delfse Donder – a chocolate cake named after the gunpowder explosion in 1654.

Lunch/dinner: In Delft you can also eat royally, one such restaurant is Kruydt. The service, ambiance and food are all exquisite, but come at a cost (it’s pricey there).

Chocolatier/ice cream: De Lelie serves the best gelato in Delft, on a beautiful Summer day you can recognize them by the huge queue in front of their shop across the Oude Kerk. Their gelato is all handmade and flavours often vary. Personally, I can’t get enough of their ‘cherry’ and ‘Delftenaartjes’ flavours. De Lelie is also a perfect place to follow a chocolate workshop or buy chocolate (p.s. in winter they don’t sell ice cream).

Try before you die: Try a typical Dutch kroket, kaassouflé or frikandel at H.O.F., where they serve the most delicious Dutch fries and snacks. Everything is fresh, homemade and organic.

Try before you die: For fresh herring you can buy one at the market at one of the fish stalls. The market is every Thursday on the Markt square, in front of the Nieuwe Kerk, as well as every Saturday on the Burgwal, across from the Maria van Jessekerk.

Drinking In Delft

Party time: At Café De Oude Jan, there is always reason for a party. They host a lot of fun events, such as live music or quizzes. Even when there’s not an event going on, the café is often visited by locals and students to enjoy a drink and have a bite.

Borrel time: Again, Kobus Kuch is ‘van alle markten thuis’ and is a great place to enjoy a ‘borrel’. The terrace is often filled and makes for a ‘gezellige’ evening until late at night.

Beer brewery: The Delfts Brouwhuis is one of the oldest beer brewers in Delft and they still brew beer! For those who cannot choose, they also host beer tastings in their Medieval cellar.

‘Borreltijd’ is a sacred moment when the Dutch get together and drink to life and ‘gezelligheid’

Shopping

Delft Blue Pottery: A Traditional Dutch Craft with Beautiful Blue and White Designs

Your visit to Delft isn’t complete without visiting one of the many stores that sell Delfts Blue pottery & other souvenirs

Delfts blue: Léon-Paul sells amazing Delfts Blauw antiques, do go in to have a look around and perhaps there’s something that catches your eye!

Locally brewed coffee: For the best artisan-crafted black gold, go to Miss Morrison. After you’ve had a cup of their coffee, you’ll be sure to find yourself addicted to the intense, delicious taste. While you’re there, don’t forget to bring some coffee (+ delicacies) home to remember the taste of Delft.

Every day Christmas: Some people would argue that Christmas should be a year round event; The Christmas Shop agrees and is open all-year round to buy the best Christmas ornaments.

Getting High In Delft

Coffeeshop: De Vlouw is the coffeeshop to be in Delft, not only can you buy weed and hash, they also sell edibles here. If you have the time, you can also sit down in their café. Try a stony’s chocolate bar or stroopwafels (syrup waffles); that’s what the best edibles in town taste like!

Coffeeshop: The Buddha is a modern coffeeshop located a bit outside of the city center.

Make sure you are well-informed on the effects of the strong varieties of marijuana in the Netherlands.

Museums

Discover the world of Johannes Vermeer, painter of ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring,’ at the Vermeer Centrum

Top choice: The Royal Delft Museum is the only remaining Delft Blue factory from the 17th century. You’ll meet the makers of Delfts Blauw and see what it is like to craft the typical Delft earthenware.

Museum: The Vermeer Centrum Delft provides you with all the information there is to know about the painter Johannes Vermeer. Although they don’t house any of his original works, there is not a better place to get to know the man behind the paintings.

Historic church: Technically not a museum, a visit to the majestic Nieuwe Kerk in Delft is worth your time! Inside you can visit the tomb of Willem van Oranje and if you look around maybe you spot some tombstones of other famous Dutch people. Additionally you can climb the stairs of the tower and when you arrive at the top you have the best view of Delft.

Parks/Beaches/Forests

Park: In the Delftse Houtpark, just outside of the city center, you have the perfect spot to take a stroll, go for a run or picnic when the weather is warm/Sunny. If the weather is really warm, you can go for a swim at the Delftse Hout beach. Even if you don’t take food with you to picnic, you can enjoy some nice food at Stek, Café du Midi or buy something to go at Hoeve Biesland.

Take in some fresh forest air in the pristine Houtpark
